Damon Stoudamire: Well, anybody who’s ever driven to the basket aggressively knows it’s a tough call for refs.You’re going full speed, there’s contact, but sometimes it’s tough to decipher if it’s a foul or just good, tough defense. Now, Russ is known for his tenacity, his strength, he doesn’t shy away from contact. So, if Mauer’s saying they missed calls because Russ is so strong and finishes through contact, it does make you wonder.
Moderator: It’s interesting as it raises questions about how officials perceive players. His free throw attempts are way down this season – the lowest since his sophomore year. Does that suggest a change in how refs are seeing his drives?
Damon Stoudamire: Could be. It’s hard to say definitively without being in the refs’ shoes. But sometimes,perception plays a role. It’s like the old saying,”If they call it tight,they call it tight for everybody.” If a ref starts seeing a player getting calls, they might subconsciously be less inclined to blow the whistle on them. But, on the flip side, if they feel a player is initiating contact, they might let some things slide.

Damon Stoudamire: It happens. I had my share of “no calls” when I was driving hard. You learn to adjust, maybe change your shot selection a bit. But at the end of the
day, it’s about adapting. Russ, he’s a veteran, he knows the league. He needs to find ways to get those calls, whether it’s a slight change in his finish, selling the contact better, or whatever it takes.
Moderator: And ultimately, isn’t that the player’s obligation? To adapt and overcome whatever challenges the game throws their way?
Damon Stoudamire: Absolutely. Officials are human, they make mistakes. Russ is a great player, he’s going to go down as one of the best. But he’s got to figure this out. He’s got to adjust his game, maybe work on his mid-range jumper a bit more, find new ways to score.
