Berger Dominates Honda Classic with Local Knowledge
Florida native Daniel Berger surged to the top of the leaderboard at the Honda Classic, carding a second consecutive 65 to reach an impressive 10-under par. This puts him three strokes ahead of his closest competitors heading into the weekend.
Berger, who hails from Plantation, Florida, seems to be thriving on home turf. His Friday round was a masterclass in consistency, featuring six birdies and onyl a single bogey. This performance allowed him to overtake fellow American Kurt Kitayama, who now shares second place at 7-under with Chris Kirk.
While Berger commands the lead, several other players are making their presence felt. Mark Hubbard delivered the day’s lowest score, a 64, highlighted by an eagle, five birdies, and a lone bogey. He sits tied with Canadian adam svensson, who also shot a 65, at 6-under par.Adding to the Canadian contingent in contention is roger Sloan, who enters the weekend rounds at 3-under par, firmly within striking distance of the leaders.Regrettably, defending champion Matt Jones struggled to find his form. After two rounds, he sits at 7-over par and will miss the cut, failing to secure a spot among the 65 golfers advancing to the weekend.
The PGA National course, renowned for its challenging water hazards, has proven to be a formidable test for the field. The infamous “Bear Trap,” comprising holes 15,16,and 17,designed by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, has particularly tested the players’ skills and nerves.

Hometown Advantage: A chat with Golf Analyst Terry Watson About Berger’s Honda Classic Domination
Welcome back, golf fans! Today’s focus is on Daniel Berger and his stellar performance at the Honda Classic. To dissect the action and provide expert insight, I’m thrilled to be joined by the esteemed golf analyst and former PGA Tour player Terry Watson. Welcome to the show, Terry!
Terry: Thanks for having me. It’s always great to break down these tournaments.
moderator: So, Terry, Berger’s certainly making a statement. Back-to-back 65s, a three-shot lead. This course seems to be playing right into his hands, especially with his local knowledge.
Terry: Absolutely. Berger being a Florida native certainly seems to have an edge here. His familiarity with the nuances of PGA National, especially those notorious Bear Trap holes, is paying off. It’s a significant advantage, no doubt.
Moderator: Speaking of the Bear Trap, it’s notoriously difficult. We’ve seen players crumble under the pressure there. Berger navigated it expertly today. What do you think was key to his success on those holes?
Terry: confidence, I beleive. Knowing the course like the back of his hand allows him to attack with more conviction. He’s not second-guessing himself, trusting his shots even when the pressure mounts.
Moderator: It’s captivating because while Berger is tearing it up, other players are also making a push. Mark Hubbard with that 64 today, Svensson right there with him. Do you think they have a realistic shot at catching Berger?
Terry: It’s definitely possible. A couple of low rounds are required, but Berger’s not invincible. The pressure will intensify on the weekend, and if someone can get hot, anything can happen.Hubbard’s round was extraordinary, and Svensson is quietly building momentum.
Moderator: Let’s not forget the defending champion, Matt Jones. Unfortunately, his tournament is coming to an early end. What happened there?
Terry: It just wasn’t his week. Sometimes the course just beats you, and it seems like that’s what happened to Jones. He couldn’t find the consistency needed to stay in contention. Recognizing when to regroup and move on is part of the game.
Moderator: Now,Terry, with this three-shot lead, who are you picking to win this thing?
Terry: I’m leaning towards Berger. His performance has been dominant, and that home-course advantage is significant. However, golf has a way of rewarding those who keep the pressure on. It should be an exciting weekend.
Moderator: Absolutely. And for our readers, let us know who your picking to win! Do you agree with Terry,or are you backing one of the chasers? Let the debate begin in the comments below!
Thanks for joining us,Terry! It’s always a pleasure to have your insights.
Terry: My pleasure. Good luck to everyone competing this weekend.
