Football Leaks: Kante was about to form offshore but backtracked – England

Chelsea player backed down in fear of consequences

N’Golo Kanté, a Chelsea player, backtracked on the idea of setting up an offshore company, after having created a company for that purpose on the island of Jersey. The story was revealed this Wednesday by Mediapart, supported by Football Leaks. It was weeks before Leicester’s transfer to Chelsea in 2016 that someone proposed to Kanté to set up an offshore company to receive part of his €5 million net salary in the form of image rights. The idea was supported by Chelsea, which would also benefit in terms of taxes. Savings with the scheme would be around one million euros. However, and allegedly due to scandals about similar cases reported in the press, Kanté chose to go back, even giving up receiving that part of the salary, which was in the order of 20 percent.

“After reading numerous articles in the press about image rights and tax investigations against players and clubs, N’Golo became increasingly concerned that the scheme proposed to him could be questioned by the authorities. The club insists and assures that It’s all perfectly legal, but N’Golo is adamant, he just wants a normal salary,” Mediapart revealed, citing a May 2017 email from the French player’s tax adviser.
