Ducati dilemma: Keeping Miller or Chasing New Blood? – A Chat with Former MotoGP Champion Randy Mamola

The 2022 MotoGP season is just around the corner, and the Ducati Lenovo team is facing a critical juncture. While Francesco Bagnaia’s future is secure with a contract extension, the fate of his teammate Jack Miller hangs in the balance. To unpack this intriguing situation, we’ve enlisted the expertise of former Grand Prix motorcycle racing legend and three-time 500cc World Championship runner-up, Randy mamola.

Randy, thanks for joining us today. Yoru insights are always invaluable. Let’s dive right into this Ducati dilemma. We know Bagnaia’s secured, but Miller’s contract is up. What are your thoughts on Ducati’s options?

randy mamola:

Well, it’s a tough call. Bagnaia’s clearly their top guy,a proven race-winner and a cornerstone for Ducati’s future. But Miller brings experience and, let’s be honest, he’s shown he can deliver. you need that consistency alongside a potential title contender like Bagnaia.

Do you think Ducati might be tempted to bring in fresh talent from their satellite teams? There are some impressive young riders rising through the ranks.

Randy Mamola:

Absolutely. Ducati has a strong farm system, and seeing guys like Bezzecchi and Bastianini push the pace has to be tempting. Injecting a young gun into that factory team could be exciting. But it can also be risky. Miller knows the Ducati well, knows the pressure of being in that factory seat.

Speaking of experience, how significant is that factor in a team like Ducati? You raced alongside some legendary teammates in your day.

Randy Mamola:

Experience is priceless, especially at the top level. These bikes are beasts, and knowing how to handle them, how to extract the maximum performance consistently, takes time and know-how. Miller has proven he can do that. Plus, a good relationship between teammates is crucial.

It looks like Bagnaia feels the same. He’s publicly supported Miller, which is commendable.

Randy Mamola:

Yes,it doesn’t always happen, but that squad dynamic is essential. You need those two pushing each other, raising the bar and working together to elevate the entire team.

We all know Ducati wants to recapture that riders’ championship. Do you think Miller’s the guy to help them achieve that Alongside Bagnaia?

Randy Mamola: He certainly has the potential.

He’s got the raw pace,we’ve seen that. but the key for Miller is consistency. He needs to minimize those errors, those off-days, and put himself in contention week after week. Ducati needs two riders consistently challenging for podiums, and that’s where Miller can play a major role.

It seems like a tough decision for Ducati, keeps the experience and consistency of Miller, or gamble on the potential of a younger rider. What say you?

Randy Mamola:

It’s a tough one. Miller brings stability, experience, and a proven track record. But Ducati also needs to think about the long-term.

They need to nurture those young talents, but they need a strong present as well. I think it’ll come down to who Ducati believes can deliver the most consistently throughout the season. Who can be that rock for them, alongside Bagnaia, in the fight for that championship?

It’s a tough call, but that’s what makes MotoGP so exciting.
