Author of a very heavy +17 over two laps this week at the Honda Classic, Matthew Wolff inevitably missed the cut set at +2. The American, who had decided between April and June 2021 to put his career on hold to treat mental health concerns, is going through a new zone of turbulence.
Three doubles, fourteen bogeys for only three birdies… The last outing of Matthew Wolff22, 35th player in the world, turned into a nightmare between Thursday and Friday on the formidable Champion Course from PGA Nationalat Palm Beach Gardens (Florida). A real way of the cross which resulted in a last place on the leaderboard, tied at +17 (157) with the Colombian Camillo Villegas.
After a rather solid start to the season, notably with a top 3 (2nd in Schriners Children’s Open on October 10) and a 5th place in the Mayakoba Championship (November 7) for four cuts made in four starts, the year 2022 has not really started as 2021 ended.American Express (January 23) and an anecdotal 64th place in Farmers Insurance Open a week later at Torrey Pines (California).

Above all, during these two meetings (before the Honda Classic), the American with an atypical swing has only played in the 60s once in seven rounds against thirteen times (in sixteen rounds) since the start of the 2021-22 financial year. The most worrying today is whether the one who finished second in theUS Open in 2020 (behind Bryson DeChambeau) is not plunging back.
Very affected after his disqualification at Masters for having signed a bad card at the end of the 2nd round, Wolff, in the wake of a missed cut at the Zurich Classic at the end of April, had withdrawn from competition for two long months to treat mental concerns which can, as we know, affect professional golfers when they go through a serious period of doubt (see tweet above ).
Visibly “cured”, he then reappeared for the US Open at Torrey Pines (victory for Jon Rahm), offering himself 15th place before playing six other tournaments but not doing better than a top 20 (17th) in WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitationalearly August…
