Drake: A Hip-Hop Icon and Sneaker Connoisseur
The world of hip-hop is known for its bold fashion statements, and sneakers often take centre stage. From Kanye West’s iconic Adidas line to Lil wayne’s love for supra Specter chimeras, rappers have long embraced footwear as a form of self-expression. Kid Cudi rocks Louis Vuitton runners and his own Adidas collaborations, while Playboi Carti favors Nike Air Frequencies and Gucci hiking boots. Yet, when it comes to sneaker collections, Drake reigns supreme.Since bursting onto the scene with his debut album “Thank Me Later” in 2010,the Toronto-born artist, known for hits like “Certified Lover Boy,” has cultivated an impressive sneaker collection that rivals any serious enthusiast. His enviable trove includes ultra-rare Air Jordans, coveted collaborations with Eminem and Carhartt, stylish Roa hiking shoes, and of course, his own signature Jordan designs.
Drake’s passion for sneakers transcends mere collecting; it’s a full-blown obsession that has led to a long-standing partnership with Nike. This collaboration has yielded some highly sought-after releases, including the unreleased “Certified Lover Boy” Air Force Ones, stage-exclusive Nike air Max Plus, and a series of coveted OVO Air Jordans. Adding to his impressive portfolio, Drake’s latest creation, the Nocta Hot Step Air Terra, is set to drop on March 3rd after a two-year tease, further cementing his status as a sneaker icon.
Drake’s sneaker game is a testament to his influence and impeccable taste, making him a true trendsetter in the world of hip-hop fashion.
Kicking it with Klay: A Conversation About Drake’s Sneaker Empire
Welcome back sneakerheads and sports enthusiasts! Today we have a real treat. Joining me is NBA legend and passionate sneaker collector, Klay Thompson. Klay, thanks for taking the time to chat with us.
Klay: Always a pleasure to talk hoops and kicks, man. Thanks for having me!
Let’s jump right in. We’ve been seeing a lot of buzz lately about Drake’s remarkable sneaker collection. What are your thoughts on Drizzy’s status as a sneaker icon? as someone who appreciates a fresh pair of kicks, does he live up to the hype?
Klay: No doubt, Drake’s got an incredible collection. Man’s got everything from rare Jordans to his own signature lines with Nike. He knows how to rock a pair and he’s definitely influenced a lot of sneakerheads, myself included. the guy’s got taste. But, let’s be real, he’s got a whole team behind him, finding the rarest pairs and making them happen. It’s a different ball game when you’ve got that kind of access and resources.
Good point, Klay. It definitely takes more than just taste to build a collection like that. Speaking of taste, what do you think about his collaborations with brands like Nike, specifically the OVO Air Jordans? They’ve been pretty successful, wouldn’t you say?
klay: I think those OVO Jordans are pretty clean, man. Drake’s got a good eye for design. They’re exclusive, they look dope, and they hold their value. That’s a good formula for a successful collab.
Now, as an athlete, you understand the connection between sneakers and performance. Do you see Drake’s love for sneakers as purely fashion-driven, or do you think there’s more to it? Could there be any performance elements that influence his choices?
klay: For me, performance comes first.I need shoes that can handle the grind of the NBA. Drake’s got a different gig, right? His choice seems more about style and expressing himself. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of those limited editions, the ones with the special tech or materials, might actually have some performance benefits. But ultimately, Drake’s about making a statement.
I think you hit the nail on the head there. It’s about style and making a statement. It’s captivating you mention performance though. We certainly know Drake is a huge basketball fan. Do you think he appreciates the technical aspects of sneakers? The cushioning, the support, the technology that goes into a good basketball shoe?
Klay: I’d like to think he does. He seems like a genuine fan of the game. Plus, you can’t be around basketball that much and not pick up on some of the technical stuff.I’m sure he knows a good shoe when he sees one, even if he’s not hitting the court in them.
Do you have a personal favorite from Drake’s collection? What pair would you love to lace up if you had the chance?
klay: I’m a Jordan man myself, so I gotta go with one of those OVO collaborations. Maybe the black and gold ones or the stingray leather pair. Those are fire.
Excellent choice. I can’t argue with those.
Now, let’s open this up to our audience.
