The north derby becomes a video derby!
In their 110th duel in the 1st or 2nd league, Werder clinched a deserved 3-2 win against HSV in front of 25,000 fans in Hamburg (including HSV idol Uwe Seeler), recaptured the top spot in the 2nd league. Werder crashes the Hamburg party thanks to a video show!
Madness: It is checked several times by the Cologne cellar – and once the referees are still wrong!
7. Minute: HSV professional Meffert deflects a Toprak shot in his own sixteen with his hand. The ball flies offside to Bittencourt, who heads it into the goal. Referee Daniel Siebert (37) initially decides offside. After the tip from Cologne, however, he says: Elfer Werder!
A dubious decision! The set of rules would have left two options open here: either unintentional handball – resulting in offside and a free kick for HSV. Or intentional handball – with that goal Werder.
Then: If the handball is intentional, the ball comes from the opponent and the offside is ruled out. According to the Deliberate Play rule, the advantage with a goal sequence may not be blown.
Siebert explains his decision at Sky: “Unfortunately, according to the current interpretation, it is a handball. The handball prevents the flank, so it is punishable. If the cross had been blocked with a knee or foot, we wouldn’t be talking about a new situation either. It’s the same here. It’s not intentional, but it’s still punishable.”
After all, the result is the same – Ducksch converted to 1-0 for Werder (10th).
HSV youth boss Horst Hrubesch (70) at half-time: “We’re doing a bit too little and are lucky that we’re not 0-2 behind.”
And the fast-paced derby has more twists and turns in store!
46. Minute: Meffert equalizes after a Glatzel pass. Cologne checks again whether it is offside. The goal counts – a millimeter decision!
50. Minute: This time, HSV professional Jatta blocks a shot from Weiser over the head with his hand. Siebert, who hadn’t seen it at first, gets a tip from Cologne. Again penalty for Werder! This time transformed Füllkrug – 2:1 Bremen!
Ducksch makes it 3-1 for the guests with a 20-metre shot (76′), Glatzel’s goal (80′) is no longer enough for HSV.
The last act is worthy of a crazy video game: In the 6th minute of stoppage time, Wintzheimer makes the acclaimed 3:3 equalizer for HSV. Check again. Again it is a millimeter decision: offside, no goal. It’s over shortly after.
In a memorable northern derby, Hamburg suffered their first home defeat of the season, also due to a wrong decision. And Werder is slowly moving away towards the Bundesliga!
