Sadio Mané wins a new trophy ahead of a brilliant Edouard Mendy

Less than a month after winning the CAN, the Senegalese Sadio Mané won the first major trophy of the season in England with Liverpool by beating Chelsea on penalties (0-0, 11-10 after tab) in League Cup final. A final where his compatriot Edouard Mendy had been however imperial.

For a long time, we thought he was going to be the hero of this final like during the Cameroonian CAN, three weeks ago against Egypt. But Édouard Mendy did not complete his “symphony” when he had disgusted the Liverpool attackers and kept his clean sheet for nearly 120 minutes. His coach decided otherwise by replacing him with Kepa, who came in specially for the penalty shootout a few seconds before the end of extra time. Kepa who would precipitate the defeat of sChelsea by missing the 22nd attempt of the penalty shootout.

It is therefore Sadio Mané who offers himself the double with a second trophy in less than a month after winning the CAN. The number 10 of the Lions of Senegal played 80 minutes in this final where he could have scored without a brilliant… Édouard Mendy. The goalkeeper notably made a double parry in the 30th minute by deflecting a shot from Naby Keita before pushing back Mané’s left-footed recovery at close range.
