Cell for man who stole lectern from Pelosi during Capitol storming

He was arrested two days after the Capitol storming. The father of five children previously pleaded guilty to entering and staying in a non-public building. In return, the prosecutors agreed to drop charges of theft of government property and violent entry and disorderly conduct on the Capitol grounds.

The judge asked Johnson, 36, if he could be a good role model for his five children, NBC writes. To this, Johnson replied that he understood he had faced a firing squad in another country “rather than in a courtroom”.

Johnson said he never intended to harm Pelosi. “If I had found her, I would have asked her if she wanted a picture with me.” Johnson’s lawyers argued that if their client had brought a less appealing object, he would not have gone to court. “He got a lot of attention simply because the lectern belonged to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.” If it had been something else, a prison sentence would not have been discussed, according to the lawyers.

In total, more than 740 people have been arrested in connection with the storming of the Capitol. The sentences handed out range from suspended sentences and fines to multi-year prison terms. More than 40 rioters have been jailed so far.

The most severe five-year prison sentence was for Robert Scott Palmer, who attacked officers with a fire extinguisher. Another famous face of the riots was Jacob Chansley, also known as the “QAnon shaman”. He wore a fur hat with bison horns, had his face painted on, and brought a spear with the American flag. Chansley was jailed for 3.5 years in November.

Four people were killed in the storming of the Capitol on January 6.
