In the midst of a war with unforeseeable consequences, UEFA has decided to end its sponsorship agreement with the Russian company Gazprom, one of the eight sponsors of the competitions designed by the highest European football organization, including the Champions League.
Monday’s decision is effective immediately and “covers all existing agreements, including the Champions League, UEFA national team competitions and UEFA EURO 2024,” UEFA said in a statement.
The body chaired by Aleksander Ceferin also decided to suspend Russian teams from their competitions until further notice, a position taken in consensus with FIFA, which will do the same with the Russian teams.
Gazprom invests 90 million a year in sports, more specifically in football.
It is one of the eight official sponsors of the Champions League. In exchange, he contributes more than 40 million euros, according to the KPMG Football consultancy.
Schalke 04, the German team in which Raúl played and is now in the second division, has already decided to remove the Gazprom logo from the blue shirts. The club also reported the resignation of the Russian company’s representative on its board of directors. Gazprom has been a historic sponsor of Schalke since 2007.
UEFA has already decided to replace the venue for the Champions League final, which was to be played in Saint Petersburg and whose stadium is owned by Gazprom. The final will now be held in Paris.
