Athletes training at various SAI National Centers of Excellence across India have done the nation proud, winning medals in international competitions over the weekend.
Eight lifters, including Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Mirabai Chanu, have booked the 2022 Commonwealth Games spot by winning medals at the Singapore International tournament.
“All the medalists attended the National Coaches Camp at NCOE Patiala. The list includes, Gold – Bindyarani Devi (W-59kg), Mirabai Chanu (W-55kg), Sanket Sargar (M-55kg), Vikas Thakur (M-96kg), Popy Hazarika (W-61kg), Usha Kumara (W -87kg); Silver – Rishikanta Singh (M-55kg); Bronze – Rahul Ragala (M-96kg),” SAI said in a statement Monday.
“Similarly, out of three medal winners at the 2022 Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament in Sofia, gold medalist Nitu Ghanghas (W-48kg) was part of SAI NCOE Rohtak, while gold medalist Nikhat Zareen (W-52kg ) was part of SAI NCOE IG Stadium, New Delhi. Bronze medalist Nandini, on the other hand, trained at PIS Mohali, an academy accredited by Khelo India,” he said.
The SAI NCOE Sonepat, meanwhile, was the training ground for Para-Archer Pooja, who won a historic silver medal in the individual category (Recurve Women Open) at the World Archery Championships. para 2022, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Compound mixed doubles pair and Paralympians Jyoti Baliyan and Shyam Sundar also won silver in the mixed doubles category at the same event.
“Furthermore, in the 1st Ranking Series, 2022 Yasar Dogu Wrestling Tournament in Turkey, India ended with one gold medal and three bronze medals. While Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Ravi Dahiya (M-FS 61 kg) won the gold medal, Deepak Punia (M-FS 92 kg), Aman (M-FS 57 kg) and Gyanender ( M-GR 60 kg) won the bronze medals.
“While Ravi and Aman have been part of Chhatrasal Stadium in New Delhi which is a Center of Excellence in Khelo India State, all 4 are training at SAI NCOE Sonepat during National Training Camps,” says the press release.
