On Sunday there was an emotional moment in the Portuguese football league. A wave of solidarity swept through the Estádio da Luz when Ukrainian striker Roman Yaremchuk came on as a substitute in the match between Benfica and Vitória Guimarães. His club shared the video on Twitter.
Yaremchuk was handed the captain’s armband by his team-mate before the 26-year-old took the field to thunderous applause. At many places in the stadium, spectators held up Ukrainian flags and rose from their seats. Yaremchuk was touched and visibly fought back tears.
In an Instagram post after the game, the Ukrainian thanked him for the heartbreaking show of solidarity:
Yaremchuk thanks fans: “All of Ukraine thanks you”
“Dear @slbenfica fans, teammates, staff, management and simply the people of Portugal. All of Ukraine thanks you for your support. The Ukrainian people will remember this moment for the rest of their lives. Your applause isn’t for me, you Applause to all the people and soldiers protecting my family, my friends and all of Ukraine.”
