Milan, Feb. 28 (askanews) – The Municipality of Milan and the University of Milan have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at the enhancement, redevelopment and management with public funds of the Saini Municipal Sports Center in via Corelli 136. This was announced in a note by the same Administration, explaining that the protocol provides: “the complete restructuring and adaptation of the Sports Center according to a multi-year work plan, divided into three lots, for a foreseeable investment under public resources, to be paid by the University, equal to approximately 36 million euros; free management for over 50 years by the University of Milan, starting from 2025; strengthening the presence of the School of Motor Sciences within the center, to the benefit of the University’s institutional activities and of all students, creating a center of excellence for the city; maintaining the sports center open to all citizens for sporting activities , with renewed and upgraded structures “.
The sports facility, one of the largest owned by the Municipality, was designed and built by Coni starting from 1971, and since 1994 it has been managed by Milanosport which guarantees the presence within the Center also of sports federations such as FIN (Federation Italiana Nuoto), FIDAL (Italian Athletics Federation), FIBS (Italian Baseball and Softball Federation), FIA (Italian Referee Federation), as well as various associations and sports clubs, hosting various national and international competitions every year. The Saini every year over two hundred thousand presences between athletes and sportsmen.
The School of Exercise Sciences of the University of Milan, a public structure, is unique in the Italian panorama for the disciplines present in the study plan and represents an academic excellence of our city: a balanced combination of theoretical and practical disciplines which guarantees the continuous dialogue between the scientific and humanistic foundations of motor and sports activity, with their practical application.
“The territory, thanks to the synergistic action of the two public bodies in a large renovated sports center, will benefit from the increased offer of national and international sporting activities and events, with all the repercussions on the economic and social fabric of the city” the Municipality specified, underlining that “the public nature of the two Bodies will guarantee and legitimize the protection of each range of users as regards the applicable tariffs. Finally, the presence of sports federations or sports disciplines associated with CONI will be regulated through specific agreements , in order to guarantee the activity of general interest to which they are entitled “.
