Middlesbrough already showed in the previous round that it is a tough customer. Manchester United only lost on the 16th penalty. The number 7 in the Championship also worked overtime against Tottenham.
Those extensions were not even undeserved, as Middlesbrough was the equivalent of the Spurs for most of the match, who did see a goal from Harry Kane disallowed.
But in extra time, coach Antonio Conte’s team did not give up. After Tottenham had played with his luck a few times, the time had come in the 108th minute: 19-year-old Josh Coburn nailed the ball past Lloris.
In the remaining fifteen minutes, Middlesbrough held out easily, even though goalkeeper Lumley needed a wonderful reflex to avoid a late equalizer.
Tottenham continue their sad streak in the FA Cup with this defeat. It last played the final 31 years ago, when the Premier League didn’t even exist yet.
