The death of Ukraine’s top scorer Dmytro Martynenko has shocked the sports world. Now the second kicker in the Ukraine war lost his life.
War has been raging in Ukraine since last Thursday. Footballer Dmytro Martynenko fell victim to the Russian invasion of his homeland on Tuesday. The Ukrainian and his mother died in a bomb attack on his house.
Martynenko was a professional at second division club FC Gostomel. The striker was a top scorer and was only 25 years old.
Now it is known that there is a second victim in Ukrainian football to mourn. Young goalie Vitalii Sapylo was killed in Kyiv aged just 21. According to reports, Sapylo died as a tank commander defending the capital. His father Roman mourns him: “He was such a happy, fun-loving boy. It was an air raid by that damn Putin. He took my child from me.”
Sapylo played for Karpaty Lviv in the third division.
The players’ union FIFPro confirms the two deaths and expresses its condolences to the bereaved.
