While the second round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) took place in Sweden last weekend, Ukraine has been at war for several days. Everyone, including athletes, is talking about the current situation in Ukraine. We already reported that after winning the Swedish WRC yesterday, Kalle Rovanpera was not very happy and did not get on the roof of the car. The athlete admitted that, given the events in Ukraine, there is currently no place for celebrations.
“The FIA continues to monitor developments closely. All our resources have been mobilized to find the best answers in the interests of sport and peace,” the FIA said in a statement.
During the rally, the situation in Ukraine was an inevitable topic, including for Russian driver Nikolai Gryazin. “I’m trying to separate it. I’m just rallying now. Sorry, I don’t want to comment on that. We do sports here,” DirtFish told Nikolai Grjazins.
Meanwhile, the two-time European rally champion, Russian rally driver Alexei Lukyanuk, admitted that he would not start the rally while the war took place. “It’s pretty hard to describe our situation and our feelings. Everyone I know doesn’t support this manure. It’s an absolutely horrible feeling. We can’t entertain ourselves and others in a situation where people are dying. We don’t need war. We’re for sports, friendship and peace.” “I have a Ukrainian surname, although I live in Russia. My coxswain ‘s wife is a semi – Ukrainian who has relatives there,” DirtFish told Alexei Lukyanukwho confirmed that he does not plan to start the rally yet.
It will be recalled that Lukyanuk had a special car design with peace symbols several years ago. The athlete found that he would love to start again with such a design.
“It was a project in which we collaborated with the Ukrainian co-pilot and politician Yevgeny Cervonenko. We came together to promote peace ideas. This design is still quite relevant, so I would like to go with it again.”
“I think no one can say anything right now, because no one understands what’s going to happen next. No one knows the real situation and the real things, so we can just sit and wait. I think about this situation outside of any sports relationship. We just have to be human. Just people It doesn’t matter if you are an athlete or a singer or something else. “
