Héctor Herrera, usual substitute with Cholo Simeone but starter after Koke’s injury and a prominent figure in Atlético’s last games, will play in the MLS from next season after committing to the Houston Dynamo until 2024, with an option for one season plus.

The Mexican midfielder arrived at the Metropolitano in 2019 as a free agent, after leaving Porto, and will do the same with Atlético, the club with which his contract ends on June 30. That is why he was free since January 1 to sign with any club at no cost for the coming campaign.

Herrera, who will turn 32 in April, has accumulated 744 minutes this course and has participated in 20 games, although he has starred in 270 minutes in the last week, after brilliantly completing the duels against Osasuna, Manchester United and Celta. In total, he has played 71 matches with Atlético, scoring one goal and dishing out four assists.

The confirmation of his goodbye will not modify Simeone’s plans with Herrera, with whom he will count until the last day, as is the case with Luis Suárez, Vrsaljko and Felipe, the other three players who have finished their contract with Atlético and who have not renewed. In fact, the Mexican will continue next Sunday in eleven for the crucial appointment of Benito Villamarín. Kondogbia’s injury, together with Koke’s, left the mattress center of the field very diminished.
