The captain of the Russian national team, Artem Dzyuba, was criticized by Ukrainian players for being silent about the military aggression of his homeland. Dzyuba has now explained why he would not comment.
Russia has been bombarding Ukraine since a week ago, which infuriated almost the entire country. Various countries have imposed economic sanctions on Russia and individuals close to the administration of President Vladimir Putin.
Many have strongly condemned Russia’s attack on Ukraine. In the world of football, FIFA and UEFA have even ostracized Russia.
Well, not a few footballers from Ukraine were also angry with players from Russia who were just silent about this action. Andriy Yarmolenko and Vitaliy Mykolenko attacked Dzyuba as the captain of the Russian national team for not making a sound at all.
After continuing to be pressured, Dzyuba finally explained why he still did not want to comment on Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine. He admits that he is not someone who has the capacity to talk about it, but insists that war is something terrible.
“Until now, I don’t want to talk about the topic of events in Ukraine,” Dzyuba wrote on his personal Instagram account.
“I didn’t want to, not because I was afraid, but because I’m not a political scientist, I never entered and didn’t intend to (unlike a large number of political scientists and virologists who have recently appeared on the Internet).”
“War is scary. But I am struck by the aggression and hatred of humans, which is growing in scale every day.”
“I am against discrimination based on nationality. I am not ashamed that I am Russian. I am proud to be Russian. I don’t understand why athletes have to suffer now.”
“I am against double standards. Why can someone do everything, and they sacrifice us all. Why is everyone shouting about sport not to get involved in politics, but on the first occasion, when it comes to Russia, this principle is completely forgotten?”
“Again, war is scary. In chaotic situations, people show their essence, sometimes negative. How much anger and abuse is given to all Russians, regardless of their position and profession. Thousands of people wrote insults and threats.”
“The war will end, but the relationship between humans will remain. It will not go away.”
“For some colleagues sitting comfortably in luxury homes in England and saying terrible things: It can’t offend us, we understand everything!” Dzyuba ended.
