In a highly dramatic cup game, HSV made it to the semi-finals despite being two goals behind. A controversial referee decision favors Hamburg’s comeback against Karlsruhe. The highlights in the video.

Hamburger SV saved themselves after 0-2 against KSC in extra time, but despite being outnumbered they didn’t manage to score the third goal. In the penalty shoot-out, however, Hamburg caught up again and are in the DFB Cup semi-finals. RB Leipzig remains the top favourite.

DThree years after the last semi-final participation, Hamburger SV is again among the top four teams in the DFB Cup. The North Germans won against Karlsruher SC 3-2 (2-2, 2-2, 0-1) on penalties and turned a temporary 0-2 deficit.

In front of 25,000 spectators, Philip Heise (40th minute) scored the goals for KSC with a free kick and Philipp Hofmann (50th minute). HSV striker Robert Glatzel equalized with two goals (52nd, 90th + 1). After yellow-red for Christoph Kobald (72nd), the Karlsruhe team only played with ten professionals.

Sonny Kittel missed a penalty kick for HSV (72nd). In the penalty shoot-out, Karlsruhe’s Daniel O’Shaughnessy hit the post with the decisive try. Two KSC shooters had already failed before him.

“You can only buy something if you get on,” said the strong KSC goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck on “Sky”: “The end is very bitter.” Double scorer Glatzel, on the other hand, enthused: “The final is clearly a dream , the goal. It’s just a game.”

In the only second division duel of the quarter-finals, Baden had more chances up until the half-time break, despite having less possession of the ball. Benjamin Goller (19th) and Choi Kyoung-Rok (21st) gave the best chances against the not compelling Hamburg.

HSV sports director Michael Mutzel complained during the break that “the key duels all went to KSC”. This was confirmed five minutes after the restart when the HSV defense was not in the picture when Karlsruhe scored the second goal. Immediately after the goal, the game picked up even more intensity after a three substitutions by Hamburg. Despite being outnumbered, KSC kept going on the offensive and fought passionately.

KSC coach Christian Eichner described the game as “a chance of a lifetime” for his players. So did his team. The two second division clubs faced each other in the DFB Cup for the sixth time – HSV prevailed for the second time.

RB Leipzig in gentle gear to the semi-finals

The RB Leipzig players had a hard time deciding: first form a circle or celebrate with the fans straight away? They had less trouble with the game itself, after the 4-0 (2-0) win at second division Hannover 96 on Wednesday evening, the favorites are in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup. The only remaining top club in the competition is only two wins away from winning the first title in the club’s young history after a strong performance.

Leipzig convinced in the style of a top team. “We play much calmer. Also a bit more relaxed. We have this maturity in our game again,” said Kevin Kampl. “We were totally dominant. We are absolutely deserved in the semifinals.” The team knows “what a great feeling it is in the final, we want to make history,” added the 31-year-old. The opponent congratulated fairly. “Of course we are disappointed, you just have to say that Leipzig is good,” said Hanover coach Christoph Dabrowski on “Sport1”.

Christopher Nkunku scored in front of 25,000 spectators in the 17th and 22nd minute for the fourth-placed Bundesliga team. The 24-year-old attacker could not get past world stars like Neymar and Kylian Mbappé at Paris Saint-Germain, so he switched to Leipzig in 2019 – and has already scored 25 goals in 36 competitive games in four competitions this season. After the break, Konrad Laimer (67th) and André Silva (73rd) scored for the 2019 and 2021 cup finalists, with national player Marcel Halstenberg making his first appearance of the season in the 75th minute after a long injury break.

There was cup fever in Hanover. The 96 team bus was greeted by hundreds of fans at the stadium – Hannover had last reached a quarter-final 15 years ago. In addition, the club entered a larger stage for the first time after a sporting decline that had lasted for more than three years. The atmosphere at the beginning of the game was correspondingly euphoric – but Dabrowski’s team only played openly in the opening minutes.

Leipzig coach Domenico Tedesco had rotated a lot compared to 1-0 on Sunday in Bochum. As the game progressed, the class difference became even clearer. There was not much to see from the Hanoverian upswing in the 2nd division with seven points from three games. Benjamin Henrichs missed the big chance to make it 3-0 (43rd) just before the break, and RB managed the game cleverly after the break.
