Messages of peace continue to flourish in professional sports. This time it was Victoria Azarenka, a Belarusian tennis player, who spoke out in favor of a ceasefire on her networks.
“I am devastated by the acts perpetrated against and in Ukraine in recent days, lamented the world number 16. I have always seen Ukrainians and Belarusians as two friendly and united nations. My heart is with those directly or indirectly affected by this war which is causing so much suffering and pain.”
Like Russian athletes, many Belarusian athletes are banned from international competitions. The WTA is more lenient since it has banned their participation in the Billie Jean King Cup but not participation in tournaments.
