The Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to leave consequences in the sporting aspect. Mixed martial arts (MMA) have become added to the massive veto of sport to both Russia and Belarus to participate in international competitions. This has been decided by the board of directors of the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF).
“It is with sadness that the IMMAF board has made this decision because we believe in the power of sport to bring people together beyond politics. However, the homeland of our friends and colleagues from the Ukrainian MMA League is under attack and have been seen forced not to compete in the Super Cup next week because they are dedicated to defending their country.
We are compelled to join with world sport to show solidarity with Ukraine,” said IMMAF President Kerrith Brown.
In this way, the suspension will prevent the Russian and Belarusian federations from participating in future championships of IMMAF, the main federative body that organizes both the World and European mixed martial arts. In fact, next week the MMA Super Cup will be held, organized by Brave in Bahrain, between March 8 and 12, and both teams will not be able to attend there due to the invasion ordered by Vladimir Putin in Ukrainian territory.
