The voting for the 2020/21 Glarner athletes’ election is open

The Glarnerland makes you sporty

The Glarner athletes have been very successful in the past two years. And this, although due to corona in the years 2020 (mainly) and 2021 significantly fewer – in certain divisions none – competitions could be held than usual. The people of Glarus and the athletes were able to celebrate world championship titles, various Swiss champions, participation in the Olympic Games and many top rankings in a wide variety of sports.

These Glarner athletes now have their next competition ahead of them and, unlike their usual competitions, they can compete with opponents from other sports. The jury that decides on the rankings will be the readers of “Südostschweiz” and the board of sportglarnerland.ch.

No April fools

The umbrella organization of Glarner Sports is also responsible for organizing the celebration, at which the best Glarner athletes are honored. This will take place on April 1st at 6:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose hall in Niederurnen and is open to anyone who is interested. The organizer decided not to have a gala evening like in previous events before Corona because the corona situation in April was not known at the start of the planning work. But it will also be a varied and entertaining evening without dinner and the term “gala”.

The people of Glarus were strong in a wide variety of sports. The nominees – seven for men, five for women, eight each for juniors and junior teams – come from 20 sports. And unlike in previous years, winter sports are the most strongly represented. 15 nominations from the categories bobsleigh, alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, ski jumping, snowboarding, figure skating and curling recommended themselves for a choice. And if you count volleyball as a sport that is played in the winter months, there are two more nominations. (rg)
