Starting this Thursday, March 3, the Pabexpo fairgrounds host the 62nd edition of the Caribbean Table Tennis Championship, with the participation of representatives from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Jamaica, Guyana and Cuba. Seven titles will be played in the individual, men’s, women’s and mixed doubles categories, and by teams.
The Cuban team is led by Daniela Fonseca and Jorge Campos, who participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and will be accompanied by Liván Martínez, Idalys Lovet, Eday Gómez, Karla Pérez, Adrián Pérez and Lizdainet Rodríguez. Taking advantage of their status as hosts, René Méndez, Thalía de Armas and Estela Crespo will also be able to participate.
According to the event’s website, the lists of Puerto Rico and Cuba come out as favorites for the award, both among men and women, with an advantage for the Puerto Ricans, although in the last edition (2019) the Dominicans took the victory in both events. In this version, the Cuban Fonseca took the gold in the single.
At the individual level, Puerto Ricans Daniely Ríos and Daniel González lead the list with the highest score, with 421 and 685 points, respectively.
During the first two days the team competitions will take place, in both sexes. In the men’s branch, Cuba shares the second group with Haiti, Barbados and Guyana. Among women, only Haiti has no representation. Ours will face the Dominicans, Barbadians and Jamaicans.
The finals will be held tomorrow, when the individual competition will also start, qualifying for the Pan American Championship in Santiago de Chile-2022 and the 2023 World Cup.
On the opening date, the Cuban women’s team added two victories, the first against Barbados (3-0) and the next against the Dominican Republic (3-1). In group one, the Puerto Ricans dominated Trinidad and Tobago (3-2) and Guyana (3-0). In the other games, the Jamaicans fell to the Dominicans (0-3) and then to the Barbadians (2-3).
Among the men, Puerto Rico (3-0), Dominican Republic (3-0), Cuba (3-0) and Guyana (3-1) came out on top against Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, Barbados and Haiti, in that order. . At the close of this edition, the second round was being played, in which Cuba faced Guyana.
