Decimated by the Covid, the Mainz team officially asked the Bundesliga on Friday to postpone its match scheduled for Sunday against Dortmund, the second in the standings. The request was quickly granted. The match will be played on March 16, the German club also specifies.
While the pandemic is receding all over Europe, FSV Mainz 05 has identified 19 cases of Covid among its players and staff. “We assume that our request will be accepted, we have only 14 players left, and no goalkeepers qualified for the Bundesliga”said Christian Heidel, the sporting director of the club currently ninth in the standings.
The regulations of the German League provide that a match can be postponed if a team has fewer than 16 valid players, including at least nine professional contracts including a goalkeeper.
