“V for Peace”: A Conversation about Sport and Solidarity
Welcome everyone to “Beyond the Score,” where we delve into the intersection of sports and society. Today, we’re joined by retired football legend, and now humanitarian activist, Luis Silva, to discuss the powerful “V for Peace” presentation before the recent Vitesse and Sparta match.
Luis, thank you so much for joining us. As someone who dedicated their career to the stunning game, what were your initial thoughts when you saw Vitesse and Sparta players, coaches, and officials form this human “V” on the field?
Luis Silva: It sent shivers down my spine, honestly. To see athletes from two different teams, irrespective of national allegiances, come together in such a unified way for a cause bigger than themselves—it was truly moving.
Absolutely. This gesture was initiated by Vitesse, a club with Russian ownership, in response to the war in Ukraine. What message do you think this sends, especially coming from a team with such ties?
LS: It’s a powerful statement against the war and a testament to the unifying power of sport. It reminds us that humanity transcends political boundaries. Vitesse sending this message despite their ownership speaks volumes about the message they want to amplify: peace above all else.
The world of sports has increasingly become a platform for social activism in recent years.Do you feel this is a positive growth,or does it risk politicizing sport?
LS: It’s a complex issue.Sports should be a place of joy and competition first and foremost. But athletes are human beings with beliefs and values, and they have a platform that can amplify crucial messages. Used responsibly, I believe this can be a force for good.
some argue that athletes should “stick to sports,” avoiding political statements. What’s your take on that?
LS: I disagree. Turning a blind eye to injustice is also a political stance. Athletes, like anyone else, have the right to speak out against wrongs they see in the world. Silence can be just as deafening as a shouted message.
This “V for Peace” gesture is undoubtedly a powerful symbol.Do you think it will inspire other sports teams and athletes to take a stand against injustice?
LS: I hope so. It not only raises awareness but also shows the potential impact athletes can have when they unite behind a common cause. It’s a reminder that even in the face of conflict, hope and solidarity can prevail.
