Tjie’s own journey with badminton began at the tender age of eight, inspired by his father.
“My father was a badminton player, so I naturally followed in his footsteps,” he shares.
The sport’s appeal lies in its accessibility and intensity. Despite the relatively small court size, players are constantly in motion, reacting to the lightning-fast shuttlecock, which weighs a mere 4 grams.
“technique is paramount in badminton,” Tjie emphasizes. “It’s not about brute force; it’s about finesse and precision. You need to avoid treating your racket like a fly swatter.”
Doubles badminton adds another layer of complexity, requiring seamless teamwork and interaction.
“The court widens slightly for doubles, but coordination is crucial to avoid collisions,” tjie notes. “Extensive practice with your partner is essential for success.”
Like many sports clubs, BC Veglo faced important challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The intermittent lockdowns and restrictions created a period of uncertainty,” Tjie recalls. “While dedicated members persevered, some newer players regrettably dropped out.”
The club’s annual Leiden Open tournament, a highlight on the badminton calendar, was unfortunately cancelled for two consecutive years due to the pandemic and scheduling conflicts.
“We were disappointed to postpone the tournament again this year,” Tjie admits. “The extended autumn competition schedule, a result of the pandemic disruptions, prevented us from hosting our event.”
Despite these setbacks, BC Veglo remains committed to promoting badminton in Leiden.
“We encourage anyone interested in experiencing the excitement of competitive badminton to reach out to us,” Tjie invites. “our games are held at the 3 Octoberhal on Smaragdlaan, and we welcome players of all levels.”

Jettro: I think it was the combination of speed and technicality. Watching my father play, I was mesmerized by the way he could control the shuttlecock with such precision. It wasn’t just about hitting it hard; it was about outsmarting your opponent, finding angles, and placing shots perfectly. That strategic element really hooked me.
Moderator: That’s engaging. You mentioned technique being paramount. Do you think that emphasis on finesse can be a challenge for newcomers?
Jettro: Absolutely. Many people pick up a racquet thinking it’s just about swinging as hard as possible. but badminton is truly a game of finesse. Developing good technique takes time and dedication. It’s like learning a new language – you need to practice the strokes, understand the footwork, and learn to anticipate your opponent’s moves.
Moderator: BC Veglo faced some tough challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. How did the club navigate those obstacles, and what impact did it have on the badminton community in Leiden?
Jettro: It was a arduous time for everyone. The lockdowns and restrictions meant we had to shut down operations for extended periods. It was heartbreaking to see some new members drop out due to the uncertainty. Though,our dedicated core group persevered. We held online training sessions, kept in touch, and supported each other through the tough times.
Moderator: The Leiden Open, BC Veglo’s annual tournament, had to be postponed twice due to the pandemic. that must have been disappointing.
Jettro: It was a huge disappointment for us. The Leiden Open is a highlight on the badminton calendar, not just for our club but for the wider badminton community in the Netherlands. We look forward to reviving it in the near future when circumstances allow.
Moderator: Let’s talk doubles badminton, which adds another layer of complexity to the game. How crucial is teamwork and interaction in this format?
jettro: Essential. Doubles badminton requires incredible synergy between partners. You need to be constantly aware of your partner’s position, anticipate their movements, and communicate effectively on the court. It’s a true test of teamwork and coordination.
