Double pack, table lead – Sturmduo makes Werder dream of promotion

Werder’s attack continues to guarantee promotion. Niclas Füllkrug turned the game against Dresden with a brace. Bremen remains leader of the second division. Fortuna Düsseldorf managed a liberation in the relegation battle.

Dhe run continues, Ole Werner’s streak lasts. The Bremen coach remained undefeated in his tenth game and celebrated his ninth success. With a 2-1 (2-1) win over Dynamo Dresden, Werder also recaptured the top spot in the second division and further extended the lead after the mistakes made by Schalke 04 and their northern rivals Hamburger SV.

The fact that the weekend ended well for the Bundesliga relegated team was thanks to Niclas Füllkrug, who converted the first deficit in a home game under Werner into a win. With his second brace of the season, goals number twelve (16th) and 13th (45th), the 29-year-old turned the early Dresden lead from Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer (2nd).

Füllkrug has scored eight times in the past seven games and underscored the assumption that the Bremen attack would guarantee Werder promotion. The last eight goals of the Bundesliga relegated are all due to Füllkrug (eight) or Marvin Ducksch (five). It was also his strike partner who initiated the 1:1 with a one-two.

“Satisfactory in terms of balance, but there is more to it in terms of performance. We just have to make these games clearer,” said the man of the day, not completely satisfied: “We stood on the pitch and knew that we would come back. But a goal like that shouldn’t happen.”

The relegation candidate from Dresden showed a significant improvement in performance in the first game with his new coach Guerino Capretti, but had to admit defeat against Bremen, who were better in the first half. “Every game is hard work. You saw that again today,” said Bremen’s Christian Groß relieved after the game.

At least in the first half, 25,000 spectators watched a class game in which there was hardly any difference in performance between those in first place and those in 16th place. After the opening goal, Dynamo created further good chances through Königsdörffer (39’/59′) and a post hit by Julius Kade (45’+1′).

Similar to the previous home game against FC Ingolstadt (1-1), Werder lost a lot of tension at times, but in the end they were able to rely on their individual quality again. The strike duo of Füllkrug/Ducksch has already scored four more goals this season (28) than the entire Dresden team (24).

Coach effect at Fortuna Dusseldorf

Fortuna Düsseldorf continues its winning streak under new coach Daniel Thioune. The Rhinelanders defeated FC Ingolstadt 3-0 (2-0) and took another step towards staying in the class. Daniel Ginczek in the fourth minute, Matthias Zimmermann (35th) and Khaled Narey (50th) scored the goals for Fortuna in front of 14,200 spectators. FCI’s Marcel Gaus, who was born in Düsseldorf, saw a yellow-red card in the 57th minute.

In four games, Düsseldorf have now scored ten points with Thioune. The 47-year-old took over the coaching post from Christian Preusser after the 1-0 defeat at Holstein Kiel in February. Fortuna now has 30 points, twice as many as Ingolstadt. The FCI is way off the bottom of the table and will hardly be able to prevent relegation.

Before the game, numerous fans in Düsseldorf had also positioned themselves against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “Peace is the way” read a large banner. Supporters also waved Ukraine flags.

Aue’s first win of the year

FC Erzgebirge Aue celebrated its first sense of achievement in 2022 and pulled Jahn Regensburg into the relegation battle of the second division. The Saxons won 1-0 (1-0) with a goal by Prince Osei Owusu (23rd), but remain in relegation rank 17. 6268 spectators watched a game with two completely different halves.

Aue, without the captain and goalkeeper Martin Männel, who was infected with Corona, started strong and had good chances through Ben Zolinski (6th) and Nicolas-Gerrit Kühn (11th). Kühn’s long-range shot was deflected to the post by Jahn goalkeeper Alexander Meyer. Since the hosts continued to work forward and hardly offered the guests any space, the opening goal fell logically. After that, Aue could have increased, but Meyer held strong. Only in the last ten minutes did Jahn find his way into the game and Jan-Niklas Beste (37th) had a very good chance to equalize.

After the break, Aue withdrew far and tried to counterattack. So there were some good chances on both sides. But as the season progressed, only Regensburg acted, but they were too imprecise in the end. In added time, Aues Jan Hochscheidt hit the post again.
