An “ugly bird” pecks Bremen upwards!
Werder beat newly promoted Dynamo Dresden 2-1 and climbed back to the top. Man of the day: striker Niclas Füllkrug (29), who scored both Bremen goals.
Coach Ole Werner: “We are very happy with the win. But it was hard work: we didn’t come into play with body language like Dresden did. That shouldn’t happen to us.”
First, Füllkrug scored after a one-two with Sturm partner Marvin Ducksch (16′) to equalize, shortly before the break the striker headed into the net after a precise large cross (45′). Before the attack, Bremen had benefited from a wrong throw-in decision, which, however, is not a case for the video referee.
Füllkrug now has twelve goals under his belt. Curious: The two goals against Dresden are his first before the break.
Dynamo had made a lightning start with the new coach Guerino Capretti (40). After just 96 seconds there was a rattle in the Werder box: Defense boss Knipping (return after a cruciate ligament rupture) extended a corner with a header to Königsdörffer, who scored the lead with his knee – 1-0 Dresden. The guests always remain a fire threat with counterattacks and set pieces, but they don’t manage to follow suit. Königsdörffer misses the best chance, who fails because of the strong Werder goalkeeper Pavlenka (59th).
The promotion competitors St. Pauli and Darmstadt had presented with victories. Werder countered with the ninth win in ten games under coach Ole Werner and greeted again from the top of the table.
