Moneyball genius Billy Beane is part of a corporation seeking an offer to buy Chelsea from Roman Abramovich.

The 59-year-old American made a name for himself as a baseball player before turning to business, where he used his famous “Moneyball” approach as the general manager of the Major League Baseball (MLB) Athletics.

He is now an executive on the Oakland Athletics baseball team.

And according to Sport Pro Media, he teamed up with the American investment firm RedBird Capital Partners led by Gerry Cardinale to form RedBall Acquisition Corp.

The corporation is said to be the first sports-focused special purpose acquisition company.

If they successfully acquire the club from Abramovich, their vision is believed to be to create a business “that complements the experience of the management team and will benefit from their strategic and hands-on operational leadership”.

Abramovich has put Chelsea on the market for £3bn after 19 years as owner of the club.

But to follow.
