It’s hard to see how a match that had little tension for 70 minutes could turn into a 20-minute rollercoaster. For more than an hour, Ghent had everything under control and the vast majority of the chances.
It helped that Depoitre had already made it 1-0 after twelve minutes. Zulte Waregem could only have threatened in the first half via two header chances from Jelle Vossen.
With some quick combinations and a lot of depth, Gent created enough chances to take a 5-0 lead around minute 70, but Hjulsager hit the post and Depoitre and Malede, among others, missed a few good opportunities.
What didn’t work for Vossen with the head, succeeded with the feet in the second half. First he hit the post, but two minutes later he scored the equalizer. Gent was forced to increase the pressure again, but the ticking clock caused nervousness and haste.
If Sissako had lost to Vossen, it would have even been 1-2, but the substitute from Zulte Waregem went for his own success and hit the top of the crossbar. The penny could fall on either side.
In the end it was the very last attack of the evening that liberated Ghent. Odjidja kicked goalkeeper Bossut, but Bezoes scored in the rebound.
