Bundesliga: Comeback brings Austria promotion

Admira took an early lead from a perfectly executed standard situation, Wilhelm Vorsager scored with a header in the 7th minute. Austria struggled as a result, but did not deserve an equalizer through Alexander Grünwald (64th). Substitute Romeo Vucic scored the winning goal in the 82nd minute with his first Bundesliga goal – and was thus responsible for Admira’s sixth home defeat in a row.

With their fourth win in a row, the guests from Vienna ended the regular season in fourth place and, after two unsuccessful attempts, were back in the master group. The people from the south of town, on the other hand, have not won 13 games in a row – since a 2-1 home win on February 24, 2018 – against the Viennese and are penultimate in the qualifying group.

Admira manages a perfect start

Austria played without the suspended Eric Martel and the injured Aleksandar Jukic and Georg Teigl. Coach Manfred Schmid was suspended after a freak out against WAC the previous week and had to watch from the stands. On the pitch he initially saw an Admira starting eleven that had only changed in one position compared to the previous week: Thomas Ebner replaced the suspended Roman Kerschbaum.

The Admira started with vigor – perhaps also inspired by the more than 5,000 visitors in the BSFZ Arena. Before the 1-0, the Czech Jan Vodhanel hit a free kick from the left precisely and sharply into the penalty area, Austria goalie Patrick Pentz had nothing to stop when Vorsager headed into the short corner. Austria didn’t even get close to the penalty area at first. In the 27th minute, Admira striker Stefano Surdanovic appeared alone in front of Pentz with a dribble, but the play was called off for offside.

Austria defeats Admira

Austria Vienna beat FC Admira 2-1. Alexander Grünwald and Romeo Vucic scored the goals for Austria.

Then the Violets took more and more control of the game. Things got tricky for the first time in the 31st minute when they couldn’t clear a ball put in the middle by Grünwald out of danger. A shot from a tight angle by Noah Ohio went just inches wide of the post just before the break.

Grünwald initiates turning point

The five minutes after the restart belonged to the Admirans, who were always dangerous in set pieces. The guests, on the other hand, usually got stuck when it came to the attack third. Marvin Martins had more space on the right in the 64th minute. The cross from Luxemburg’s Grünwald was deflected twice and made it 1-1. The game-deciding action also went down the right side: Muharem Huskovic put the ball on Vucic, who had come on for Grünwald, and shot in low.

A difficult season, which was marked by many failures and financial difficulties in the area, ended satisfactorily for Austria, at least in the regular season. With the achievement of the master group, an important milestone was reached. In the second phase of the championship there are also two Viennese derbies against arch-rival Rapid. For Admira, the qualifying group is about staying up in the league – a situation that is not unfamiliar to the people from the south of town.

votes on the game

Andreas Herzog (Admira coach): “The start was very positive with the early lead, but unfortunately we gave up the game, even though Austria weren’t extremely dangerous. The two situations after the break were crucial, we weren’t paying attention. Austria’s switching game worked.”

“A draw was possible, but overall we didn’t put enough pressure on the offensive. That has been going on throughout the season. It works a lot better away from home. Of course it’s a learning process for my team week after week, that doesn’t make it any easier.” About the starting position in the qualifying group: “With the exception of LASK, all teams are close together. A lot can still happen there.”

Manfred Schmidt (Austria coach): “I’m very relieved. It’s a great success for the team, for the club, for the fans that we did it. The players showed nerves, it wasn’t as easy as in the previous games. We fell behind with an unnecessary free kick.”

“Admira didn’t make it easy for us afterwards either, but the lads stayed calm and didn’t get hectic. We then had good chances, made good substitutions and deserved to win in the end. We are now looking forward to ten new finals. The objective would be to possibly play for the European Cup.”
