Max Kruse had to listen to a lot during the home game against his former club Union Berlin on Saturday. But due to the 1-0 win for VfL Wolfsburg, the 33-year-old shouldn’t have mattered much. He even sang along with the taunts.
Union celebrated a big party on Tuesday evening. The Irons advanced to the semi-finals of the DFB Cup with a 2-1 win against St. Pauli. Wolfsburg now put an end to the party and dampened Union Berlin’s European ambitions. One player was particularly in the limelight on Saturday: Max Kruse.
Union fans insult Max Kruse in Wolfsburg victory
Just under half an hour before the game kicked off, the ex-Berliner was whistling. The Union block whistled first when Kruse was seen on the stadium screen leaving the team bus with his Wolfsburg colleagues. The mood of the Berliners didn’t get any better when Kruse entered the square to warm up. From the moment Kruse was read out during the team line-up, every mention and every ball contact by the 33-year-old was catapulted into catcalls.

Typically Kruse, the Wolfsburg man stayed cool. When he and his VfL colleagues do a lap of honor after the win and pass the Berlin fan block, the 2,500 Union fans sing: “Max Kruse is a son of a bitch.” And the native of Hamburg simply sings along.

Kruse left Union Berlin on January 30 to join VfL Wolfsburg. With Kruse, Union lost a crowd favorite and, above all, an important performer. Because Kruse scored 16 times for the Irons in 38 Bundesliga games – making him Union’s most successful Bundesliga goalscorer of all time.
