Dominic Thiem Eyes Clay Court Comeback After Injury Setback
Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem continues to face delays in his return to professional competition. The former world No. 3 announced on Monday via Instagram that he will miss the upcoming ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami. While Thiem acknowledged progress in his recovery, he stated that these events are still too soon for his comeback.
Thiem, who triumphed at the 2020 US Open, has his sights set on a return to action on clay courts. He believes this surface best suits his playing style and will provide the ideal environment for his comeback. The clay court season kicks off next month with the prestigious Monte Carlo Masters, scheduled from April 10th to 17th.
This latest setback marks another chapter in Thiem’s challenging journey back to the top of the sport. Initially aiming for a return in December at an exhibition tournament in the United Arab Emirates, he subsequently hoped to be ready for the australian Open, where he was a finalist in 2020. Plans to compete in the Cordoba Open in Argentina in February were also dashed. Thiem’s last competitive match took place in June of last year, following a prolonged period of rehabilitation for a persistent wrist injury.
Currently ranked 50th in the ATP rankings, Thiem’s absence from the tour has been keenly felt. Tennis fans eagerly await his return, hoping to witness the Austrian’s powerful groundstrokes and tenacious fighting spirit once again on the court.
