The SIG Association basketball club in Illkirch has decided to dedicate a wall in its hall to the players who have marked its history, it is the “hall of women”. Objective: to promote women’s sport.

A “hall of women” within the Strasbourg Illkirch-Graffenstaden basketball club (SIG Association), in other words a wall dedicated to the players who have evolved in the club and marked its history, will be erected.

It is Audrey Kopp who opens the ball. The one who joined the SIG Association in 1989, wore the jersey of the women’s first team for 15 seasons, captain for seven years, is therefore honored. The 40-year-old, now a member of the board of directors, will be given a collector’s jersey on March 26 before a photo and her dedication are sealed on a wall of the Illkirchoise room.

“I don’t really like being put forward, explains a little embarrassed Audrey Kopp. Nor the laurels of glory. But it’s fun, recognizes the former player. It’s the club of my heart, I made very strong friendships there and I still spend a lot of my time there.

It is of course a way to promote women’s sport and a nod to the hall of fame, the American basketball pantheon which brings together photos, jerseys and other memories of NBA stars. “We’ve been trying to honor our players for a while.explains Stéphane Weber, president of the SIG Association and the pun came naturally, hall of fame, hall of women”he says with a smile.

If Audrey Kopp is the first to appear on this wall, three players each year will be celebrated in this way. A jury will meet to appoint them. “I hope it will give ideas to others to develop women’s sportadds Stéphane Weber. In any case, it inspired the president of the federation (Jean-Pierre Siutat, Editor’s note), since he will be there on March 26 for the inauguration of the wall.”

Audrey Kopp, whose two children obviously play GIS, drives the point home. “Of course women’s sport is not really publicized, so this kind of initiative highlights it, that’s good”. A women’s wall which will benefit from a beautiful setting since the amateur club, whose women’s 1st team plays in Ligue 2, will soon have a brand new room.

The godmother of this “hall of women” is none other than Christiane Occansey, mother of Hugues and Eric who both evolved in Pro A in their time, and who at more than 80 years old, is a member of the board of administration of the GIS.
