It makes sense for him to focus on a surface where he’s most cozy and confident as he works his way back to full fitness after his wrist injury.

Mary Jo: It’s a testament to Dominic’s dedication that he’s been so patient with his recovery. Rushing back could have jeopardized his career, so this cautious approach is wise. Though, tennis is a demanding sport, and the competition has only intensified during his time off.
It won’t be easy to regain his top-three ranking. He’ll need to rediscover his match rhythm,sharpen his tactical awareness,and build his confidence back up. But, if anyone can do it, it’s Thiem.

Mary Jo: It’s certainly possible. Monte Carlo is traditionally the start of the clay court season, and Thiem has a history of performing well there.However, it wouldn’t surprise me if he chooses to ease back in with a smaller tournament first, just to test the waters and gain some valuable match practice.
Do you think his absence has shifted the landscape of men’s tennis at all?
Mary Jo: Absolutely. Thiem’s injury coincided with the rise of young stars like Alcaraz and Sinner. It’s created a engaging power dynamic where these young players are no longer looking up to Thiem as a dominant force but competing directly with him for titles.
Thiem will need to prove he’s still a threat to the new generation. It’s going to be a thrilling battle to watch unfold!
What’s your prediction for Thiem’s clay court season?
Mary Jo: I predict a cautious but successful return. I don’t expect him to win every tournament, but I do believe he’ll show flashes of his brilliance and remind everyone why he was once considered one of the best players in the world. The ultimate goal, of course, will be to contend for another title at Roland Garros.
