The board of Beerschot has decided that Mike Vanhamel is no longer allowed to play for the club. The goalkeeper was previously stripped of his captaincy by the departed Javier Torrente and is now suspended. Wouter Biebauw is in goal for the derby today.
Vanhamel is therefore no longer in the match selection. Antoine Lejoly is the reserve goalkeeper. Vanhamel will not play again this season. He still has a contract until 2024, but will probably not serve it out. He reacted disappointed on Instagram.
“Proud captain of the purple ship! At all times, both in the fantastically beautiful moments such as the unforgettable title in 1B, but also in the difficult moments such as this season! When appointed as captain, the assignment was clear! Continue the chosen path and watch over the preservation of the foundations of the reconstruction of Beerschot ( Tene quod bene)! A successful collaboration based on hard work, trust and being critical of each other.”
“Critical for everyone! For myself in the first place, for club and teammates in the second place! Each of the 134 games I proudly wore the Beerschot shirt, whatever the result, team-or-individual performance was! For extra sporting reasons, I am no longer allowed to play, because even if things don’t go well, the truth must continue to be said! Then egos don’t count, personal feuds must be put aside and all noses in the same direction to keep the ship on course Either way, I’ll give my all for the club until the last second!
