Russell Westbrook is often seen as a scapegoat for the disappointing season at the Los Angeles Lakers. However, some fans overshoot the mark, according to Westbrook’s wife Nina, the family even received death threats.
Westbrook himself spoke about the situation after the defeat in San Antonio and sided with his wife. “It’s gotten to a point that’s a strain on our family and I find that very concerning. At the end of the day it’s still a game,” Westbrook said. “When it comes to basketball, I don’t mind being criticized for missing shots. But if my name gets dragged in the dirt, I have a problem with it.”
Westbrook’s wife reported on Twitter on Mondaythat she was insulted on social networks and also received death threats. According to Westbrook, the reason for this is the agitation against her husband. What was meant above all was Skip Bayless Fox Sportswho has always polarized with his talk show and recently stated that he would not let her shut him up.
“I appreciate that you are defending your husband, but I will continue to tell the truth as I see it.” Bayless replied on Twitter, whereupon she clarified her criticism again. “There’s a difference between pure name calling and ‘your own truth’. That’s even more important when you have a platform and can share your ‘truth’ with millions of people. You then have a certain responsibility.”
Nina Westbrook also added that she didn’t want any attention with her statements in order to put herself in the spotlight. “It’s not a game for me. Basketball is a game, but this is my life, the life of my children and my family. Putting someone down for no reason is never the answer.”
