Maxim Iskam from Budo Mugen Gronau was in top form and became runner-up. Artjom Werner finished seventh.
Iskam competed as one of the lightest fighters in the 140-pound category. He confidently fought his way into the semi-finals. There he faced Lennard Ross (Senshu-Hau Kleve), by far the largest and heaviest fighter in the weight class. After just under a minute, the Dinkelstadter scored a waza-ari with a hip throw. He skillfully defended this lead. Only in the final did the 13-year-old lose to Iles Tataschvilli (Bonn Judo School) with a hip throw and hold.
“The semi-final was a top performance in terms of tactics, fighting and fitness,” said coach Bodo Manthey. “Against a significantly heavier and stronger opponent, it’s incredibly difficult to maintain a tactical line throughout the fight.”
The draw meant that Werner (up to 50 kg) had to compete against the later West German champion Alexander Utczyk (JC Nievenheim) in the very first fight. Despite a courageous performance, he had to accept defeat and entered the consolation round. There he was able to win a fight quickly. In the next fight he dominated the grip fight over the entire course of the fight. After the regular fight time did not bring a decision, it went into overtime, in which the first rating immediately decides the fight (golden score). Here Werner unfortunately lost after inattentiveness with a foot throw.
