The Océanic found their way back to victory on Sunday when they defeated the Drummondville Voltigeurs 4-2 in front of a crowd of 1,908 spectators gathered at Center Marcel-Dionne.
This victory puts an end to a streak of six losses for the Rimouski team which had also lost its last nine clashes on opposing ice rinks.
Veteran Xavier Cormier took matters into his own hands with two goals (including one in an empty net) and an assist. Jacob Mathieu and Ludovic Soucy completed, the latter with the winning goal with five minutes to play.
Very unhappy with Friday’s loss to Baie-Comeau, Captain Soucy was very involved in the victory, as the head coach pointed out.
“A victory appreciated by both players and coaches. Ludovic was incredible, especially in the first while Drummondville came out very strong. He played an A game and gave confidence to Kidney (Liam) and Drover (Alex) in addition to getting the big goal. From the second, the guys bounced back and came back really strong. We had a collective effort from everyone. Our last two periods have been really solid,” commented Serge Beausoleil.
His club dominated 43-32 in shots, including 35-16 in the last two periods during which the Voltigeurs were not very threatening.
“When our forecheck is solid and we cover each other, we’re on the puck and we’re playing in the offensive zone. The guys did it well and we limited the overnumbers after the first period. And, the intensity was there. »
Only one goal in first
It was Jérémy Lapointe who had the two goals for the Voltigeurs who took a 1-0 lead in the first period. Cormier tied the score in the second before Mathieu scored on a short-range shot midway through the third period to give the visitors the lead. Lapointe replied two minutes later. Soucy, with his 8e of the season, then scored the winning goal completing a great breakthrough by Liam Kidney.
Gabriel Robert worked well in front of his net with his 30 saves. At the other end, Riley Mercer signed a very good performance of 39 saves.
