In Monday’s NFL news: DeMarcus Lawrence’s future in Dallas in question; Seattle declines Washington offer for Russell Wilson; and more. Don’t miss the NFL news.
DeMarcus Lawrence’s future with the Cowboys in doubt
Just last week it was reported that it is “probable” that in Dallas sooner rather than later they decide to dispense with the services of the WR Amari CooperHowever, everything seems to indicate that he is not the only superstar that could leave the team. Via Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning Newsthis Sunday it was reported that the Cowboys they asked the DE DeMarcus Lawrence to take a pay cut, which he refused and could now result in his leaving the organization.
Lawrence is scheduled to earn $19 million in base salary next season with a team cap hit of $27 million, which equates to the fifth-most in the league at his position. Thus, if the Cowboys decided to cut him from their roster, they would generate $19 million in cap space with $8 million in dead money heading into next season if the move is made after June 1.
The Aiken, South Carolina native came to Dallas as a second-round pick in the 2014 Draft. He signed a 5-year, $105 million extension in April 2019 after two straight seasons as a Pro Bowler, and his $21 million average of Annual salary is the second highest figure on the team, only behind the 40 million dollars that QB Dak Prescott is entitled to annually.
Despite the above, Lawrence’s performance in the last three seasons has not been as expected. Over the past 39 games he has only recorded 14.5 sacks, 33 QB hits, 26 tackles for loss and hasn’t returned to the Pro Bowl. He appeared in just seven games last season after undergoing surgery for a broken fifth metatarsal in his foot, and now his future in Dallas hangs in the balance. Should DeMarcus Lawrence really take a pay cut?

Seattle reportedly declined Washington’s offer for Russell Wilson
In Washington, they believe they are just one quarterback away from becoming immediate contenders for SB LVII next season, but their first attempt to acquire a superstar at the position did not pay off. Via Ian Rapoport from NFL Medialast Friday it was reported that the Commanders offered multiple first-round picks to the Seahawks in exchange for the QB Russell Wilson“but the proposal went nowhere.”
“The Commanders have every intention of acquiring an upgrade at the most important position in the sport. The team has made calls throughout the league in hopes of reaching an agreement,” Rapoport added. However, early last week, the HC Pete Carrollof the Seahawks, insisted that he “has no intention” of trading a Wilson who also recently noted “the west coast is better for me right now“So, based on these statements, a change to Washington would not make any sense.
However, the previous year Wilson did not have his best role on the West Coast; Seattle finished with a losing record for the first time since Wilson took over as the team’s starting quarterback in 2012. Still, he was selected Pro Bowler by completing 65% of his passes for 3,113 yards, 25 TDs and 6 INTs, proving that he’s not the center of any existing Seahawks problem. Should Seattle consider accepting Washington’s bid for Russell Wilson?

JC Jackson wants to be the highest paid cornerback in the NFL
The franchise tag period began on February 22 and will end as soon as this Tuesday, March 8. the CB J.C. Jackson was one of the leading candidates to be appointed with a franchise tag, however, New England is no longer expected to tag it. And as he heads toward free agency, via Mike Giardi of NFL Mediathis Saturday it was reported that “Jackson still likes Patriotsbut money matters. If it’s not the money Jalen Ramseyhe does not want to talk”.
In other words, Jackson wants to become the highest-paid cornerback in the league, an honor that currently belongs to Ramsey (20 million dollars a year), of the Rams, who in September 2020 signed a 5-year, 100-million-dollar extension with a signing bonus of 25 million dollars and with 43.7 million dollars fully guaranteed. The Ravens’ Marlon Humphrey ($19.5 million annually) and the Saints’ Marshon Lattimore ($19.4 million annually) are the next highest-paid players in the league.
Last season Jackson led the NFL in passes defensed with 23, earning him his first All-Pro and Pro Bowl nomination. In addition, in the last two seasons he has recorded an outrageous total of 17 interceptions. The Maryland alum earned an annual salary of just $3.384 million in 2021, and heading into the next free agency process, he knows it’s time to get paid. Does JC Jackson deserve to be the highest paid cornerback in the NFL?

Possible extensions for Jaire Alexander, Michael Gallup and Tyreek Hill
In more NFL news, three of the league’s superstars could be getting contract extensions sooner rather than later. In Green Bay, Dallas and Kansas City are already working to make sure they don’t lose their respective key players any time soon. In this space we recapitulate where the possible new agreements between players and teams are currently located:
- CB Jaire AlexanderGreen Bay Packers. Via Ian Rapoport from NFL Media, this Sunday it was reported that during the week Green Bay resumed negotiations with Alexander on a contract extension: “Usually, extensions are carried out in the spring or summer,” Rapoport added. “But he’s definitely someone the Packers want to keep for a long time.” Alexander, 25, is scheduled to make $13.29 million in base salary next season before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2023.
- WR Michael GallupDallas Cowboys. Via Adam Schefter’s ESPNIt was reported last Friday that the Cowboys are “close” to reaching a new deal with Michael Gallup, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in a couple of weeks. After it was reported that Dallas apparently won’t keep WR Amari Cooper on its roster, all indications are that the 26-year-old Gallup will be the pick.
- WR Tyreek HillKansas City Chiefs. Via Ian Rapoport from NFL MediaEarlier Friday, it was reported that the Chiefs and Drew Rosenhaus, Hill’s agent, exchanged proposals last week about a potential extension for their client. It’s not yet clear whether the two sides are close to a new deal for Hill, who will only make $1.035 million in base salary next season while taking a hit against the team’s $20.685 million salary cap. Hill is scheduled to test free agency in 2023.
Should the Packers, Cowboys and Chiefs rush through their potential decisions? Are these players really fundamental to the schemes of their respective teams?

Historical marks are registered in the Scouting Combine 2022
The NFL Scouting Combine 2022 has left splendid performances in recent days, however, the best brands were present this Sunday thanks to a pair of defensive backs. In the 40-yard test, characterized by running said measure at pure speed, the CB Kalon BarnesBaylor, and the DB Tariq Woolenof Texas-San Antonio, posted two of the fastest times in Combine history.
Barnes, who clocked 4.23 seconds, in addition to now having the fastest time in history for a defensive back, also became the second fastest time in the history of the event, being second only to WR John Ross, who in 2017 stopped the stopwatch at 4.22 seconds. For his part, Woolen finished in 4.26 seconds, tying for the fourth-fastest time ever seen at a Combine.
Now, after yesterday’s performances, the Top-5 history of the Combine in the 40 yards was as follows:
- WR John RossWashington University, 4.22 segundos (2017)
- DB Kalon BarnesBaylor University, 4.23 seconds (2022)
- RB Chris JohnsonEast Carolina, 4.24 seconds (2008)
- DB Tariq WoolenUTSA, 4.26 seconds (2022)
- RB Dri ArcherKent State, 4.26 segundos (2014)
Finally, it should be noted that over three seasons in college as a cornerback, Barnes played 28 total games, registering 59 tackles, 13 passes defensed and 3 INTs. For his part, Woolen, in two seasons as a cornerback, played a total of 18 games accumulating 60 tackles, 9 passes defensed and 1.5 sacks. In which round of the Draft should both prospects be selected considering their strong performance at the Scouting Combine?
