Liverpool made four changes from the last duel against West Ham United. The trio of Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah was set up at the front. Inter Milan paired Lautaro Martinez and Alexis Sanchez up front.
In the middle, Inter fielded Arturo Vidal to fill the position of Nicolo Barella who was absent due to suspension. Inter, who need to win at least three goals, played aggressively from the start and troubled Liverpool.
Despite winning possession of the ball, Liverpool struggled to penetrate the tight Inter defense. Inter’s attack which was built through Alexis and Ivan Perisic on the left side several times was able to penetrate the host’s back row.
However, it was Liverpool who made the first clear chance in this match in the 30th minute. Beginning with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free kick from the left side, the ball went into the middle of the penalty box and was headed by Joel Matip even though it only hit the bar.
