Liverpool FC lost their home game against Inter Milan, but still reached the quarter-finals thanks to the first leg. The defeat ended Virgil van Dijk’s unbelievable series. A medical emergency in the stands caused moments of shock.

Slost the game, only hit the post twice – but Mohamed Salah was quite satisfied. “Is okay. Maybe the goals will work out in the next game. As long as we keep going, it’s all good. That’s the most important thing,” said the Liverpool striker.

Despite losing to Inter Milan, the Egyptian and his team reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The Reds lost 1-0 (0-0) to the Italian soccer champions in the round of 16 on Tuesday, but Jürgen Klopp’s team won the first leg in mid-February 2-0.

“I have to pay Inter a big compliment. A strong opponent. It was an open exchange of blows. Over the two games it’s ok I think both teams won once and we went through in the end. It’s not cool to lose a game, but progress is what counts. The main objective has been achieved.”

Lautaro Martínez (62′) scored the goal for the guests at Anfield, who were outnumbered immediately afterwards. Alexis Sanchez (63rd) saw yellow-red after repeated foul play.

The greatest moment of shock, however, was caused by a spectator in the stands, who – accompanied by songs and applause from the audience – had to be treated in an emergency. The game was interrupted and only resumed when the affected spectator had regained a stable condition. The ball rested for three and a half minutes.

Inter then continued to focus on the offensive and tried to turn the deficit from the first leg. Against the compact defense of the English, however, the guests could hardly get through.

One bar, two posts for Liverpool

Former Bundesliga professional Hakan Calhanoglu (41′) had the best chance for the Italians in the first half, but Liverpool keeper Alisson was able to fend off his sharp free-kick. Otherwise, the Reds controlled what was happening – and actually had the better chances overall.

In the 31st minute, former Schalke player Joel Matip headed the crossbar, immediately afterwards his defensive colleague Virgil van Dijk also failed with a header. Liverpool also got off to a better start after the break, but Salah (52’/76′) also hit the post with his shots. However, within a few seconds, Inter turned the game upside down.

First Martinez scored the surprising lead for the guests with a long-range shot, only two minutes later the Italians were suddenly outnumbered – Sanchez was shown yellow-red after repeated foul play. Liverpool then pushed for an equaliser, but were unable to capitalize on the advantage in the form of a goal. It was the Reds’ first Champions League defeat this season.

Central defender Virigl van Dijk had previously remained undefeated in 60 home games in a row. But in the end, the Dutchman will certainly do the same as his striker and his coach: the main thing is to keep going.
