Russian authorities have confirmed they arrested U.S. women’s basketball player Brittney Griner last month, as they report finding e-cigarette cartridges containing cannabis-derived oil in her luggage when she was at an airport near Moscow. . The charges Griner faces could carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Griner, who is African-American, is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a seven-time US Women’s Basketball All-Star. The basketball player has played on a team in Russia for the last seven years. Brittney Griner’s wife, Cherelle Griner, said on social media that they are fighting for Griner’s release and her return to the United States. Over the weekend, the US State Department issued a notice advising its citizens not to travel to Russia and warning them that the embassy in Moscow has limited power to help Americans there.
