Shortly before the start of the men’s competition at the Indian Wells tennis tournament, it is still unclear whether Novak Djokovic will take part in the Masters 1000 event.
Djokovic, who explained in a BBC interview in mid-February that he was still not vaccinated against the corona virus, is in the tableau of the top-class event and is number two. After a bye in the first round, the 34-year-old Serb would meet the winner of the duel between Jordan Thompson of Australia and Belgium’s David Goffin in the second round.
Tournament Director Tommy Haas: “Are in exchange with Team Djokovic”
“Novak Djokovic is on the list of participants in the tournament, and that’s why he’s also in the tableau,” said the organizers in a brief statement. Former world number two Tommy Haas is tournament director in Indian Wells. “We are currently in contact with his team,” it said. It is still unclear whether Djokovic received an exception for entry into the USA.
Djokovic was expelled from the country just before the start of the Australian Open earlier this year and was therefore unable to defend his title in Melbourne. The long-time number one in the world had traveled to Australia believing that it had an entry permit. A federal court, however, decided otherwise.
Novak Djokovic fails in Dubai at Jiri Vesely
Djokovic has played his only tournament this year in Dubai. There the Serb failed in the quarter-finals at the eventual finalist Jiri Vesely from the Czech Republic. Only a negative PCR test was required to take part in Dubai, but no vaccination against the corona virus. (dpa/hau)
