A few days after the fight they shake hands, share confidences and take pictures. Feeling is noticeable. The day after tomorrow they’ll be dropping right into the jaw. One of the great boxing matches of the year, the “Diamond Boxing Night”, had its debut yesterday at the Adarsa Mercedes-Benz dealership in Siero. Aitor Nieto from Oviedo and Jon Míguez from the Basque Country will meet on Friday (from 7:30 p.m.) at the Palacio de los Deportes in Oviedo.
The two will dispute the title of champion of the European Union, which has never been won by someone born in the region. Nieto, 37, seemed relaxed yesterday: “This is the third time I’m going to compete for this title and I have to face a rival I respect a lot. He is younger than me, I am thirteen years older than him and I hope to fight well, ”said Nieto, who has been champion of Spain six times, holds several international titles and has a total of 33 professional fights.
For Nieto, however, Friday’s fight will be one of the most special of his career as he will be within reach of being the European Union champion in his region. “Fighting at home is a responsibility, but I have to do my job and try to win,” said Nieto. His rival on Friday, the Basque Jon Míguez, showed respect for his rival. “I give thanks for having this opportunity that has come to me after suffering and fighting. I have to face a person I admire and I’m preparing and looking forward to it. I have trained hard and we are prepared”, said the boxer. Néstor Domínguez, from the combat organizing team, acted as master of ceremonies at yesterday’s presentation. “The big evenings are back and we are very happy because we will have one of the best fights that can be played right now. It will be a historic fight because a European Union title has never been played in Asturias and there is a lot at stake”. The highlight of the evening will be the fight between Nieto and Míguez, but there will be much more.
The Asturian Jonathan Alonso, Sergio Fernández and Jesús Lobato will also fight against other fighters. The first part of the evening, which will begin at 7:30 p.m., will be devoted to amateur boxing, with four matches. “I feel very Asturian and after going around the world boxing, I am excited to do it here. I hope no one is missing”, said Jonathan Alonso, present at the presentation.
Tickets for the evening are already available and the cheapest are twenty euros.
