UK government sanctions Roman Abramovich and suspends Chelsea sale

The Russian oligarch is now affected by the sanctions of the British authorities which completely paralyzes his club.

He was previously not affected by the sanctions of the British government, this is now the case. Roman Abramovich is among seven wealthy and influential Russians close to the Kremlin sanctioned Thursday by the British government. The owner of Chelsea therefore sees all his British bank accounts frozen and must also suspend the sale of his club.

«The asset freeze restrictions also apply to all entities owned or controlled by Roman Abramovich. This means Chelsea football club is now also subject to an asset freeze under UK financial sanctions“, said the government in a press release.

Chelsea therefore found themselves completely paralyzed and faced numerous bans starting with the impossibility of renegotiating a contract. This could seal the future of Rüdiger, Azpilicueta and Christensen, all three free this summer. The Blues are also banned from signing any players and can no longer sell club-related merchandising. Finally, only subscribers are authorized to buy tickets for the matches. The club’s official website has already canceled the sale of tickets for the sides at Middlesbrough and Brentford scheduled for today.

Another consequence linked to government sanctions: the main sponsor of the team, Threethe mobile phone and telecommunications company, says it is reviewing its relationship with the club. “We are in discussion with Chelsea and we are reviewing our position”said a spokesperson for the company.

According to information from Telegraphfor Chelsea to be sold (and sanctions lifted) Roman Abramovich must accept that the entire sale be paid to a fund set up by the government and not by Abramovich himself.
