The announcement of the cancellation of two more weeks of the season, which was originally going to start next March 31stoccurs when team owners and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) are meeting in search of a new labor agreement.

“In a last effort to preserve the season of 162 games, we have made proposals that encompass the specific concerns expressed by the MLBPA. Unfortunately, after our second session of negotiations we are still without an agreement,” Manfred said.

For its part, the Major League Baseball Players Association immediately stated its disagreement with the cancellation of the series.

“The owners’ decision to cancel more games is totally unnecessary. After submitting a full package of proposals to the league, players have yet to receive a response,” the association said in a statement.

“Our highest priority remains the completion of a fair contract for all players, and we will continue negotiations to that end,” the MLBPA concluded.
