The 28-year-old had already managed such a feat in the 3-3 win in Klagenfurt this season. In the 2-0 win in Altach, he was successful via a penalty shot. Kerschbaum now has eight goals this season, making him the clear number one in his team. Thanks to him, the Südstadters ended their misery at home after six defeats in a row in the BSFZ Arena. Ried remains weak away from home. The 2-1 win at Admira in November remains the only success in the championship abroad.
After just missing out on a place in the master group, Rieder wanted to make a strong statement in the “lower play-off”. But that didn’t happen at all. Coach Robert Ibertsberger’s squad clearly couldn’t take the moral low blow of last week and were lucky not to fall significantly behind before the break. The only goal was a converted penalty by Kerschbaum. Julian Wießmeier had played the ball with his hand when Kerschbaum shot at shoulder height. The video assistant referee stepped in and Josef Spurny confirmed the decision to study TV.
Admira starts with victory
Admira was able to celebrate a successful start in the qualifying group of the Bundesliga. The Lower Austrians beat SV Guntamatic Ried 2-0 in the first of ten games on Saturday.
Kerschbaum puts together a double penalty pack
After that it was mainly Marlon Mustapha who repeatedly had dangerous actions, but either made the wrong decisions in the end or finished too weakly. In the 14th minute, he should have crossed other players who were running with him, but shot the shot himself and was denied by ex-Admiran Christoph Haas, who represented the suspended Samuel Sahin-Radlinger well. The Admira striker also headed over it (15′) and missed another top chance shortly before the break. Mustapha rounded Ried’s goalie, but then couldn’t get the ball past Tin Plavotic (44′).
Before that Jan Vodhanel (35th) and then Stefano Surdanoviuc (45th + 1) also lacked efficiency. The Rieder could not shed their numerous individual mistakes and their uncertainty even after the break. The Admirans dictated what happened as they wished, but you still had to criticize the conversion of chances. Mustapha missed another chance with a header (56′). The second hit was a copy of the first. This time, Felix Seiwald helped out in the penalty area, again the TV pictures were decisive. Kerschbaum converted again, but unlike before his weak shot was durable.
Hardly any chances for Ried
Ried only became dangerous with a useful shot at the bar, which Andreas Leitner would have been there for (73rd). But an even higher home win would have been more deserved. Haas prevented further goals in his Bundesliga debut in a duel with Vodhanel (82nd) and Surdanovic (83rd, 96th). Admira thus scored three points for the second time in a row.
votes on the game
Andreas Herzog (Admira coach): “I’m very happy that we finally managed to win again at home. That was hugely important. The performance was very good both in terms of fighting and football, of course with the shortcoming of evaluating chances, which runs through the whole season. Two goals from hands-on penalties are also nice, but I would have liked to have had goals from open play, which unfortunately didn’t happen.”
“Mustapha creates chances, doesn’t get them for free, but it’s enormously important that he becomes more callous at the end. We got off to a successful start in the relegation battle, but everything is still open. We hope it was the starting signal for more victories.”
Robert Ibertsberger (Ried trainer): “We weren’t in place from the first second. I can’t explain it, you have to work it out. Things have looked pretty good in training over the past few days, and the players have also been very focused. It was a well deserved victory for Admira. All of our basic virtues have been forgotten, while Admira, just as we wanted to do it ourselves, was there from the start with good aggressiveness and attitude.”
“The two penalties weren’t decisive, it was our performance. I’m very disappointed with the performance, but maybe it was good as a wake-up call for the next few weeks. I got a little louder at the break and after the match I also clearly told the players what kind of match they had played.”
