The policy of career guidance of Mr. Yasunori Matsubayashi, the captain of the national V in the summer of 2003 and the director of the baseball club.
Joso Gakuin High School in Ibaraki is a prestigious baseball school that has produced 13 professionals so far. On the other hand, in 2021, 118 students from national and public universities, 8 students from the medical school, and 2 students from the University of Tokyo passed in 2022, and it is also known as a preparatory school. The goal of the school is to go on to a four-year university, and the baseball club is no exception. So what kind of career guidance are you doing? We talked to Yasunori Matsubayashi, the director of the baseball club, in the series “Select Design” about the career paths that parents are worried about.
Even in the baseball club, career guidance is provided on the premise of going on to a four-year university. This is because there is a big difference in the average annual income between high school graduates and college graduates. According to the 2020 “Basic Survey on Wage Structure” released by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the average annual income compared with the same generation is up to nearly 2 million yen higher for university graduates. In recent years, giant Hirokazu Kikuta outfielder (2019 draft 3rd place) and Rakuten Uchida Yasuhito Uchinote (2013 draft 2nd place) have been high school graduates from the same school, but they are enthusiastic about their studies. And the results are also high. After that, he recalls that he had selected to be a professional.
“If you become a professional and have a lifetime employment until you are 60 years old, you will be” put into a professional “immediately after graduation, but the reality is not.” Even if I aim to be a professional, I don’t think the university is a detour.
Among the career guidance that presupposes going on to higher education, the important thing is to have a purpose. In recent years, the rate of enrollment has increased, and we have entered the “era of university enrollment”. I think that clarifying “what you want to do” and enrolling in the school is the first step to make a difference from the same generation. The purpose of the baseball club is both Bunbu and Budo.
“Even at university, it is a guidance that encourages you to join the baseball club and aim for both Bunbu and Budo.” At Joso Gakuin, it is a rule that you cannot join the baseball club from the general entrance examination, and only those who have passed the special skill recommendation can join the club. In the school policy that encourages students to go on to a four-year university, I hope that they will not only study, but also “because I am enrolled in baseball, I want them to make use of their strengths.”
