The one experienced by the 34-year-old French striker on Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabeu is difficult to overcome for a sportsman: a memorable hat-trick to tell the grandchildren, in front of the public that every athlete dreams of their own exploits, against an opponent who now seemed to have put the Real Madrid.
Donnarumma’s blunder was the twist in a film that has since followed an almost unbelievable script. Benzema’s season figures are monstrous, but the 30 goals and 12 assists in the 33 games played tell only a part of his current weight in a team that has carried the number 9 on his shoulders since Ronaldo’s farewell. The quality of the French striker’s game is very high and expresses a footballing knowledge with few equals in the world at the center-forward voice. The recent changes involving the Ballon d’Or could really reward a decisive player in the next edition both in La Liga – firmly in the hands of Real Madrid, and in the Champions League – especially if the merengues were to make further progress towards the final in Paris.
